I vividly remember the first time I had heard of Tycho. I was interning in Chicago and my cousin Lauren told me she was going to see an artist who basically owned the ambient/downtempo space and I should tag along. I immediately looked up Tycho’s SoundCloud and told her that style of music was far too mature for me (and it was).

I missed out on seeing who is now one of my primary go-to’s when I’m craving down-tempo, chill music.

Tycho is manned by San Francisco producer/artist/photographer Scott Hansen. From putting out his first EP (The Daydream / The Disconnect) back in 2007, Tycho has blossomed into a Grammy-nominated electronic producer. EP after EP showcases his ability to weave together colors and sounds to create an artistic masterpiece.

His most recent single “Only Love” with Benjamin Gibbard (lead vocalist for Death Cab for Cutie) and Brijean (percussionist for Toro y Moi and Poolside) is so far my favorite song of 2022. He blends in with his surroundings so effortlessly, transforming his original sound into an ambient house soiree.

Part of me a little glad I didn’t go to his concert 4 years ago – I definitely wouldn’t have appreciated it as much. I guess I’ll just have to go see him and find out first-hand.

Go stream “Only Love” and enjoy on this fine Monday evening.
